Proving your English proficiency is a mandatory step for obtaining a UK Student Visa. At Study Icon, we ensure your IELTS selection and preparation align precisely with UKVI secure testing standards (SELTs).

Official English Language Requirements

  • UKVI mandates that international students studying at degree-level or above must demonstrate English at CEFR level B2, equivalent to IELTS band 5.5 in all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
  • For below-degree courses (e.g., foundation or pre-sessional), the required level is CEFR B1, corresponding to IELTS band 4.0 overall and in each component.
  • Your Student Sponsor (university) must confirm on your CAS that they have assessed your English proficiency—or that you are exempt (e.g., from a majority English-speaking country or degree studied in English).

What is an IELTS for UKVI Test?

  • Only IELTS for UKVI (Academic or Life Skills) is accepted for visa applications—regular IELTS not taken at an approved UKVI test centre will be rejected.
  • The test format, scoring, and content are the same as standard IELTS; the distinction lies in UKVI-approved administration and issuance of a SELT certificate with a UKVI number

If your CAS states your sponsor has assessed your English, you may not need to upload an IELTS certificate separately; check your CAS carefully.

Exemptions from IELTS for UKVI.

You may be exempt from taking IELTS if:

  • You are a national of a majority English-speaking country (e.g., USA, Canada, Australia) and can show your passport.
  • You have a degree taught in English at a recognised institution, assessed by UK ENIC or your UK university.

In such cases, your sponsor will declare the exemption in your CAS record.
